Big Loser is an indie rock band from Winnipeg, Canada, sort of. Their music slips between Celtic-inspired folk, synth-driven pop, and unapologetic country. What ties it all together is a devotion to storytelling, harmony, and melody. Every song feels rooted in place and shaped by time, grounded in the prairies they grew up on.
Formed in 2018, Big Loser brings together musicians who cut their teeth in punk bands and small-town jam spaces before finding their sound somewhere between heartland grit and indie charm. Their music blends authenticity with emotion, exploring what it means to grow up, grow apart, and still hold on to where you came from.
Their debut record, Spitting Distance, is about returning to a place that no longer resembles the home you once knew. It’s about fathers and sons, old friends, and the weight of what gets handed down across generations, across distances, across silence. Rooted in Manitoba’s Interlake region, the album traces the emotional geography of Lockport, St. Andrews, Petersfield, Selkirk, and East Selkirk. Time marks all of us. Spitting Distance asks whether we can recognize those marks in each other, and extend empathy even when it isn’t offered back.
Don’t let the self-deprecating name fool you. Big Loser writes about the moments that define being human: the heartbreak, the humour, and the hope that connect us all.
The band features Alex Paradoski (formerly A Waste Odyssey), Adam Wayne Brown (formerly Take Me To The Pilot), Eric McEwen (A Waste Odyssey), Trevor Hnatowich (A Waste Odyssey), and Jesse Lawrence (Fencing, Virgo Rising).
Big Loser has never shied away from experimentation. Each release explores new sonic ground while keeping their storytelling at the centre. Spitting Distance continues that tradition, returning both thematically and musically to the Interlake, and to songwriter Alex Paradoski’s folk-inspired roots, captured in stripped-down production and the familiar sound of the piano in his living room.
